Robert A. Kelly was born June 8, 1944 to the late Rev. Agustus Berritt Kelly and Clara Jones Kelly in Wade, North Carolina. He is the second oldest son in a family of fifteen children. He was born in a family of sharecroppers and learned the value of leaning and depending on Jesus at an early age.
He has been married to Evangelist Ruby Shields Kelly for 48 years. They have three children; one son Reginald (Deceased), and two daughters, Ronda and Robianna who is married to Minister Mondale Tucker, both of Fayetteville, NC. They also have one grandson Vincent, and two great grandchildren; Khalil and Makayla. Pastor Kelly worked for the Cumberland County School system in Fayetteville, NC and retired in 2010 after 30 years of service.
Robert A. Kelly received his early education at Wade Elementary School and Armstrong High School, and completed his secondary education at Fayetteville Technical Community College.
Pastor Kelly believes in the scripture “study to show thyself approved unto God.” Therefore, he has labored for years to continue this Christian Education practice and achieve his ministry and educational goals. He has studied at various Bible Colleges such as Carolina Bible College, Shaw Divinity School, and FulGospel Bible College. His studies were rewarded on December 14, 2003 when he completed his BA in Biblical Studies and received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree because of his contributions to ministry and his work with several churches in the Fayetteville Cumberland County area.
Robert A. Kelly accepted Christ at Sandy Grove Free Will Baptist church under the leadership of the late Rev. Louis T. Ford. He later joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church which later became the Household of Faith World Outreach Center. He was called into the ministry in 1980 and preached his introductory sermon on May 4, 1980, under the leadership of Rev. Marion J. Wade. In April 1985 he was called to serve as interim pastor at Springhill MB Church, Hope Mills, NC. On June 30 1985 he was ordained by the Union Missionary Baptist Association at St Matthews MB Church, Rennart, NC. On the first Sunday in July 1985 he was installed as the pastor and has served there for twenty six years.
Robert A. Kelly is a past moderator the UMBA where he has served in various capacities. He has served the UMBA as an instructor for the Ordination Academy, on the board of the Christian Education department as well as serving as the treasurer. In addition to those positions, he has served on the Reorganization, and Committee of Temperance, the Ministerial board and the Executive Board. He has also served UMBA as the 1st and 2nd vice president and the president of the Union of Unions Association.
Robert A. Kelly enjoys reading, fishing, and singing often doing them all at the same time. During his time in ministry he has written two songs that were recorded by Ruby S. Kelly & the Hewbrewetts gospel singers; “I’ll let nothing shake my faith in God” and “Lord You’ve done so much for me.”
Guided by a firm foundation in God’s word and his motto of “Do the right thing,” Robert A. Kelly has been in ministry for thirty-two years and has pastored for the last twenty-seven years. To God be the Glory!
